02/06/06 - Pennsylvania Slots Shake Things Up
Slot Machines continue to stir up quite a bit of controversy among the
community in Pennsylvania. Ever since last year when a bill was passed
allowing up to 61,000 slot machines statewide there continues to be a debate
on whether or not the addition will open up the communities to the downfalls
of gambling, mainly feared to be prostitution, addiction and, basically,
criminal activity in general. Optimists are counting on the chance that the
new casinos and resort based slot machine parlors will be a draw for
tourism, thereby when the tourist leave town they will take the majority of
the drawbacks with them.
The other consideration is for the entertainment establishments that are
already in place and would have to be potentially contending with the slot
machines. West Virginia already allows table games to be played within its
state borders, so pessimists are predicting a surplus of supply for a
community that just wont have enough demand to go around. There is already
a huge establishment that is being proposed for the Station Square area of
Pittsburgh by the people with Harrahs and Forest City Enterprises that will
feature a $512 million Casino which will make up a portion of their $1
billion residential and entertainment complex.
The development is projected to house about 3,000 slot machines and could
end up featuring over 8,000 slot machines if the group ever feels it would
be worth while to expand. The slot machines that will be bought in for this
specific project will be part of the states total 61,000 slot machines that
will be allowed into the state of Pennsylvania.
