Slots Freebies - Can Slot Machines Deter Addiction?
What makes gambling on slot machines so addictive? Are
gambling addictions learned or are there genetic?
These are some of the many questions that are being
addressed at a conference in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino
for the National Center for Responsible Gaming. The executive director of
that same center, Christine Reilly, addressed those in attendance about the
importance of the role of medical science and psychology in the up and
coming studies into the nature of a problem gambler.
The uncontrollable impulse to bet beyond their means
is a destructive habit, that is just now beginning to be address as a
serious addiction that requires immediate intervention.
"In the past, we haven't had good research, but that has changed,"
Christine Reilly said. "We hope this idea shapes the whole conference from
this point on, what we find from our research will become the building
blocks to establishing practices within the industry that are guided by
science and are effective means to treating acute gambling addictions."
The centers two-day conference specifically dealt with
the power of personal choice within the confines of addiction, certain
medicinal efforts being made in helping those cope with a gambling
addiction, and also measures casinos, themselves, can make in order to deter
compulsive gambling like anti-addiction designed slot machines. And of
course the difficulty in enforcing tactics such as excluding suspected
compulsive gamblers.
The goal of the Center for Responsible Gaming, which
has been largely supported and funded by the gaming and slot machine
industries themselves, is to research with scientific means to pin-point
what the possible negative effects of compulsive gambling are and then
devise more effective ways the casino and slot machine industries can
eliminate their causes, while also doing researches on what the most
positive benefits of gambling with casinos and slot machines are, and then
finding a way to maximize and make those benefits much more prevalent than
the negative effects.
